Profile
Timothy Joseph Varro, born in 1956 in Regina, Saskatchewan, grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia, influenced by his father’s “chalk talks” and creative collaborations. Inspired by his grandfather’s blacksmithing, his uncle’s clay sculptures, and early experiences on television, Varro developed a passion for ceramics, photography, graphic arts, and TV/video production. His interest in the arts led him to a distinguished career of over 30 years as an innovative art teacher, educational leader, and art administrator, where he pioneered new technologies in media arts.
Varro’s life took a significant turn after a car accident resulting in a spinal cord injury, forcing him to adapt and seek new ways to compensate for his incomplete spinal cord injury.
With faith, family support, and a renewed focus on his art, Varro discovered the transformative power of working with clay, allowing him to move beyond his disability and infuse his work with a light-hearted quirkiness. He aims to provoke viewers’ imagination by exploring unexpected connections and ironic twists. One recent project, “New Town,” is a multimedia ceramic sculptural bas-relief that playfully examines relationships between people through a quirky illustration of the buildings that these people live, work, play, worship, gamble, and exist within
